Video Projection Mapping, 2023

Projection Mapping Urban Architecture Music & Dance Live Performance
Bologna Festival Torri Kenzo Tange Fiera District

/ Overview

In July 2023, the Kenzo Tange Towers in Bologna became the monumental stage set for Pleiadi, a site-specific performance with music, dance and video mapping by Luca Agnani Studio. The project, produced by Bologna Festival, lit up the Fiera District square by transforming the towers designed by Kenzo Tange into a large audiovisual device, driven by the percussion rhythms of Pléïades by Iannis Xenakis.

/ Project Details

Name: Pleiadi – The Square Lights Up

Client: Bologna Festival

Location: Torri Kenzo Tange, Fiera District, Bologna

Date: 18–20 July 2023

Technique: Architectural Projection Mapping

Artist: Luca Agnani Studio

/ Challenge

The concept emerges from the dialogue between the monumental geometries of the Kenzo Tange Towers and the sonic construction of Pléïades, composed by Iannis Xenakis. The challenge was to transform 83-meter-high buildings into a luminous scenography capable of combining architecture, rhythm, dance and video mapping without losing the graphic strength of the towers.

/ Visual Development

Architecture and mathematics

The video mapping explores the relationship between universe, mathematics and architecture, bringing out patterns and harmonies connected to the design of the Kenzo Tange Towers.

Percussion-driven visuals

The visual sequences are built on Peaux, from Xenakis’s Pléïades, translating the rhythm of percussion into luminous forms, movement and geometric transformations.

Site-specific performance

The square becomes a shared scenic space, where video mapping dialogues with dance and live music in a performance designed for the site.

/ Solution

Pleiadi transforms the Kenzo Tange Towers into a living surface, where light, geometry and sound build a large-scale audiovisual narrative. The project combines Kenzo Tange’s architectural vision, Xenakis’s music, dance and contemporary digital language, giving the square an immersive public experience.

/ Technique

Projection mapping

The vertical surfaces of the towers were digitally calibrated so that the animations matched the real proportions, volumes and geometries of the architecture.

Large-scale projection setup

The projection was designed for the urban scale of the Fiera District, using the towers as monumental wings for an evening performance open to the public.

Music & synchronization

Synchronization with the percussion of Pléïades guides the rhythm of the sequences, creating a balance between sound composition, dance, light and architecture.

/ Context

Pleiadi – The Square Lights Up was presented from July 18 to 20, 2023 in Bologna’s Fiera District square, dominated by the Kenzo Tange Towers. The creation of the video mapping on the piece Peaux was entrusted to Luca Agnani, in a project that intertwined music, dance and contemporary architecture in a site-specific performance.
