ANIMATED PAINTINGS
Van Gogh Shadow
2013
/ 01 The hidden light in the paintings
Van Gogh Shadow was born in 2013 as a visual experiment: Luca Agnani imagined how Vincent van Gogh’s paintings might have looked if real light had entered those scenes, generating shadows, depth and motion. Thirteen paintings are broken down into planes, reconstructed in 3D and animated as living environments, not to modify the original work, but to reveal the time and space hidden inside the painting.

/ 02 Viral spread
Published on YouTube, the video quickly moved beyond the dimension of a personal experiment and, within a few months, was seen on every continent, circulating across social networks, blogs, digital art pages and cultural platforms. The strength of the idea is immediate: the audience recognizes Van Gogh’s paintings and, at the same time, discovers them as living scenes, crossed by a light that seems truly to belong to the painting.

/ 03 The Van Gogh Museum
A significant moment in the project’s path came with the invitation from the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, where *Van Gogh Shadow* was presented as part of the “Friday Night at the Van Gogh Museum” program. A video born online thus entered the most authoritative symbolic space connected to the Dutch painter’s work, transforming an independent digital research project into one also recognized in a museum context.

/ 04 The LG OLED event
In September 2013, the project was requested for the launch event of the new LG OLED monitors at John Lewis in London. The shadows, deep blacks, contrasts and luminous quality of the video became ideal content for presenting an image technology, showing that Van Gogh Shadow could also work in an international context linked to design, communication and visual innovation.

/ 05 The TV quiz
During the same period, Van Gogh Shadow also reached Dutch television: the channel Nederland 1 used it within the program “1 vs 100”, introducing a quiz question with images from the project. This was an important step because it brought the animated paintings before a national general audience, outside digital art circles and beyond online visibility alone.

/ 06 The birth of the exhibition
In 2016, the project changed format: it was no longer just a single video, but became an exhibition built by separating the paintings and transforming each one into an autonomous loop. Each painting is conceived as a small suspended scene in which time flows from sunset to dawn: light slowly changes, shadows lengthen, night enters the painting and then gives way to day again.

Numero: 10 animazioni in loop
Ritmo: From sunset to dawn

/ 07 The touring exhibition
The touring exhibition brings Van Gogh Shadow to several Italian venues and confirms the strength of the project beyond the web: the audience no longer watches the animation on a screen, but moves through a sequence of animated paintings in an exhibition space. From Palazzo dei Priori in Viterbo to later presentations, the format continues to work and remains active today as a path dedicated to animated paintings.

/ 08 Opening toward Monet
After Van Gogh Shadow, the research opens toward Claude Monet with Monet Shadow, a new evolution of the animated paintings. While Van Gogh works through matter, shadow and emotional intensity, Monet makes it possible to explore another type of movement: reflections on water, chromatic vibrations, atmosphere, Impressionist light and slow variations of the landscape.

/ 09 Painting takes time
Van Gogh Shadow and Monet Shadow do not turn masterpieces into simple animations: they try to bring out what is already present but invisible within painting — time, light, breath and the possibility of entering the image for an instant. This is where the project finds its strongest identity: not using technology to replace painting, but to listen to it and restore movement to it.
