PETRA
The Treasury of Petra
Video Projection Mapping, 2023
/ Overview
In 2023 the Treasury of Petra, one of the most iconic archaeological sites in the world, was transformed into a narrative surface through a video projection mapping intervention. The project, created by Luca Agnani Studio for Petra Light Festival, reinterpreted the millennia-old history of the Nabataean city, transforming the rock-carved facade into an immersive experience of light, time and memory.
/ Project Details
Name: Petra Light Festival – The Treasury of Petra
Client: Petra Light Festival
Location: Petra, Jordan
Date: 23 April – 3 May 2023
Technique: Architectural Projection Mapping
Artist: Luca Agnani Studio
/ Challenge
The concept comes from a unique condition: a monumental facade carved directly into the rock more than two thousand years ago. The challenge was to respect the historic identity of the site and transform the Treasury into a non-invasive narrative surface, capable of amplifying the symbolic and visual value of Nabataean architecture.
/ Visual Development
Historical storytelling
The visual narrative evokes the history of the Nabataeans, the cultural layers and the archaeological fascination of Petra through animations integrated with the real geometry of the facade.
Architectural enhancement
The animations respect proportions, columns, niches and details carved into the rock, using light and movement to enhance the material without overriding its historic identity.
Immersive atmosphere
The multisensory path leads the audience toward the Treasury and transforms the archaeological site into an emotional space where light, sound and architecture build a journey through time.
/ Solution
The mapping transformed the Treasury into an immersive visual narrative, combining historical research, archaeological sensitivity and contemporary digital language. The narrative crosses eras and cultural evocations, offering a poetic and dynamic vision of one of the world’s most iconic heritage sites.
/ Technique
Projection mapping
The surface of the Treasury was digitally reconstructed and calibrated on the real facade to achieve perspective correspondence, volumetric precision and depth effects.
High-power projection
The projection was designed to enhance the monumental scale of the Treasury and adapt to the site’s environmental conditions, maintaining readability, depth and visual impact.
Sound design & synchronization
The sound component accompanies the rhythmic development of the sequences and reinforces the immersive experience, synchronizing images, atmosphere and spatial perception.
/ Context
Petra Light Festival took place from 23 April to 3 May 2023, bringing light installations, sound and 3D projections on the facade of the Treasury to the ancient city of Petra. The project helped enhance the archaeological heritage through non-invasive technology, offering the audience a contemporary reading of Nabataean history and legacy.
