Kernel Festival
Villa Tittoni Traversi
Desio, Monza Brianza
/ Overview
In July 2011, during the first edition of Kernel Festival, Villa Tittoni Traversi in Desio became the architectural support for an audiovisual 3D mapping project. The festival, dedicated to contemporary art languages connected to technological experimentation, brought interactive & digital art, audiovisual mapping, electronic sound & music and temporary architecture into dialogue inside the eighteenth-century villa and its park.
/ Project Details
Name: Kernel Festival /011 – Luca Agnani / Stereochrome
Event: Kernel Festival /011
Location: Villa Tittoni Traversi, Desio (MB)
Date: 1–2 July 2011
Technique: Audiovisual 3D Mapping
Artist: Luca Agnani / Stereochrome
/ Challenge
The concept comes from the direct encounter with the historic facade of Villa Tittoni Traversi, a complex, symmetrical surface rich in architectural elements. The intervention had to transform the building into a dynamic visual organism, keeping the villa’s proportions, frames and depth legible while integrating the sound component into an audiovisual sequence consistent with the festival’s experimental spirit.
/ Visual Development
3D visual matter
The defining elements of the villa facade were broken down, highlighted and recomposed through luminous lines, geometries, virtual volumes and graphic transitions calibrated to the real surface.
Light architecture
The projection works on the proportions of the elevation, transforming columns, frames, windows and volumes into a dynamic visual story designed to be viewed within the context of the villa and its park.
Festival atmosphere
The intervention places historic architecture within a context of digital art and electronic music, generating a night-time experience in which the villa becomes surface, stage and narrative matter.
/ Solution
The mapping built an audiovisual sequence capable of composing and decomposing the architecture of Villa Tittoni Traversi, making the forms, lines and facade details legible. The visual solution combines architectural precision, 3D animation and sound synchronization: light does not simply decorate the building, but animates it as a living surface, transforming the villa into a temporary scenic device.
/ Technique
Projection mapping
The facade was digitally reconstructed and calibrated on the real surface to achieve perspective correspondence, volumetric precision and depth effects.
Multi-projector setup
The visual sequences were developed as an audiovisual short film, with rhythm, transformations and chromatic variations designed to dialogue with the sound component and the festival audience.
Music & synchronization
The audiovisual sequence was developed to dialogue with the music and timing of the event, alternating graphic phases, volumetric transformations and more abstract moments connected to Stereochrome’s visual research.
/ Context
Kernel Festival /011 brought to Villa Tittoni Traversi a program dedicated to the relationship between digital art, architecture, sound and public space. In this context, the project by Luca Agnani / Stereochrome stands as an audiovisual 3D mapping intervention: an experiment on the villa facade that anticipates an important part of the studio’s later path in architectural projection mapping.
